Restorative Yoga
-
Restorative yoga is a gentle and therapeutic style of yoga that focuses on relaxation and rejuvenation. It typically involves a series of well-supported poses, often held for extended periods with the help of props like blankets, bolsters, and blocks.
-
Here are some of the benefits associated with restorative yoga:
Stress Reduction: Restorative yoga is particularly effective in triggering the relaxation response, which helps reduce the production of stress hormones. This can lead to a deep sense of calm and relaxation.
Relaxation of the Nervous System: The long-held, supported poses in restorative yoga stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the "rest and digest" system. This promotes relaxation and helps counteract the effects of chronic stress.
Improved Sleep Quality: Regular practice of restorative yoga has been linked to better sleep. The relaxation achieved during the practice can ease insomnia or sleep disturbances, promoting a more restful night.
Enhanced Flexibility: While restorative yoga is not focused on intense stretching, the gentle nature of the practice can help improve flexibility over time, especially in individuals who may be dealing with stiffness or tension.
Balanced Energy Levels: Restorative yoga helps balance the body's energy by calming the mind and relaxing the body. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing fatigue or burnout.
Mental Clarity and Focus: The meditative aspects of restorative yoga, combined with conscious breathing, can enhance mental clarity and concentration. This makes it a valuable practice for those seeking to calm a busy mind.
Lowered Blood Pressure: Due to its stress-reducing effects, restorative yoga may contribute to lower blood pressure levels. This can be beneficial for individuals dealing with hypertension.
Pain Management: Restorative yoga can be effective in managing chronic pain conditions. The supported poses help release tension and reduce discomfort, offering relief to individuals dealing with issues like lower back pain or arthritis.
Emotional Healing: The practice of restorative yoga provides a quiet and supportive space for individuals to connect with their emotions. This can contribute to emotional healing and self-awareness.
Enhanced Respiratory Function: The focus on conscious and deep breathing in restorative yoga can improve respiratory function. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions or those looking to enhance their breath awareness.
Supports the Immune System: The relaxation response triggered by restorative yoga is associated with improved immune function. Regular practice may contribute to overall health and well-being.
Accessible for All Levels: Restorative yoga is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, making it suitable for those recovering from injuries or individuals seeking a gentle practice.
As with any form of exercise or wellness practice, individual experiences may vary, and it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

When you arrive to my office I will have your mat and props already set up for you so you can land directly on your mat. We will chat briefly about how you’re showing up that day and what you may want to focus on. We’ll spend the next 50 minutes or so moving through 3-10 poses held for several minutes each, all heavily supported by props so there is little physical effort required. There’s the option to add light scent and/or gentle music. While each session varies slightly from person to person, almost certainly we will spend some time focused on breath work as well as some guided meditation. At the end of your class I’ll slowly orient you back to the present moment, we will chat about your experience, then conclude our session.

Nidra
-
iRest Yoga Nidra, often simply referred to as iRest, is a form of guided meditation and deep relaxation that combines principles of traditional yoga nidra with Western psychology. Developed by Dr. Richard Miller, iRest Yoga Nidra is used for various purposes, including stress reduction, healing, and personal growth.
-
Stress Reduction: iRest is known for its ability to induce a deep state of relaxation, promoting the release of stress and tension. The practice involves systematically scanning and relaxing different parts of the body, leading to a sense of calm and ease.
Improved Sleep: Regular practice of iRest has been shown to enhance the quality of sleep. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, it can help individuals struggling with insomnia or other sleep-related issues.
Emotional Healing: iRest incorporates mindfulness and self-inquiry, providing a platform for individuals to explore and address unresolved emotions and issues. This can contribute to emotional healing and a greater sense of well-being.
Enhanced Mindfulness: The practice encourages heightened awareness and presence in the current moment. This mindfulness component can lead to improved focus, concentration, and a greater ability to manage thoughts and emotions.
Pain Management: iRest has been used as a complementary approach for managing chronic pain. By fostering relaxation and shifting the individual's relationship to pain, it can contribute to a reduction in perceived discomfort.
Trauma Resolution: iRest has been adapted for use in trauma-sensitive settings. It provides a gentle and non-intrusive way for individuals to work through traumatic experiences, fostering a sense of safety and empowerment.
Greater Resilience: Regular practice of iRest has been associated with increased resilience to life's challenges. It can help individuals develop coping mechanisms and a more adaptive response to stressors.
Mind-Body Connection: iRest emphasizes the connection between the mind and the body. By promoting awareness of sensations and emotions within the body, it encourages a holistic approach to well-being.
Reduced Anxiety and Depression: Studies have suggested that iRest may be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. The practice's focus on relaxation and mindfulness can positively impact mental health.
Accessible to All: iRest is accessible to people of all fitness levels and physical abilities. It can be practiced lying down or sitting, making it suitable for a wide range of individuals.
As with any wellness practice, individual experiences may vary, and it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting a new mindfulness or meditation practice, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

When you arrive to my office, we will have pre-determined how you think you’d like to rest your body for our session and that will be set up for you (anything from seated upright, reclined on the couch, or on the floor with yoga props). iRest is relatively structured and will operate very similarly from session to session. We’ll chat a bit a you get settled before moving into the guided meditation. It often starts with gentle breath work, move into a body scan, then focuses on the felt sense of emotions in the body. During this guided meditation, you simply relax and follow along to what I’m saying in your mind. After 30-45 minutes, I’ll slowly orient you back to our space, we’ll chat about your experience, then conclude your session.
For one on one sessions there is the option to shift the practice slightly so that it’s part guided meditation, part conversation so rather than experiencing only in your mind, there will be questions/prompts I ask that give you the opportunity to articulate what you’re experiencing.
